Times Square exudes energy, whether it's from the thousands of tourists and locals that pass through the landmark intersection every day or the thousands of lights that adorn billboards, theater marquees, and shops. This exuberance of energy appears counter to any message of efficiency or sustainability. The ecologically friendly Ricoh billboard is an exception, however.
The Ricoh billboard is the "greenest" billboard in the Big Apple's Times Square, powered 100% by the sun. Solar panels collect energy that power the energy-efficient flood lights from Lumerica's predecessor, LumaSmart, which illuminate the billboard. The lights use LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors, adding to the energy efficiency of the sign.
Ricoh commissioned Lumerica/LumaSmart to design the LED flood lights positioned at the foot of the sign. Lumerica was a natural choice due to our extensive experience with LED technology, and because all of our products are void of mercury and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). By avoiding the use of potentially toxic materials, the Lumerica LED fixtures help protect the environment and reduce Ricoh's carbon footprint.
Lumerica's experience with off-grid systems in outdoor environments led our engineers to choose OSRAM Opto LED's for their quality, robustness, and high efficacy. The billboard incorporates over 3,000 LEDs, which are estimated to provide approximately 50,000 hours of illumination, or almost 11 years of service, before maintenance is required.
As New York is subject to harsh winters and hot summers, the LED fixtures were created to withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit.
The fixtures are also equipped with a contoured ultra UV stabilized lens that helps prevent snow or moisture from obstructing the lights, while at the same time resisting fading or cracking from the sun's UV radiation. Weep holes were also built around the fixture to carry any moisture out and away from the lights.
